This Weeks Parsha's Torah Yitro "Jethro" Exodus 18:1-20:23 Haftarah Isaiah 6:1-7:6, 9:5-6, Brit Hadasha Matthew 5:17-32
Yitro This week's parasha is called Yitro, which is the Hebrew way to say Jethro. It refers, not to a hillbilly from Tennessee, but to the Midianite father-in-law of Moses. It encompasses the text from Exodus 18:1 through 20:23. Of course, the most significant part of this reading is the text that gives us the Ten Commandments; however, that is not our focus this week. Obviously, these should always be our primary focus, but I will draw my teaching from some more overlooked aspects of the text. Exodus 18:12 tells us "And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices for G-d;" This indicates that Jethro, although a Priest to the gods of the land of Midian, became a follower of the One True G-d of Israel. This was an incredible example of a Gentile coming to faith in G-d; and not just a Gentile man, but a leader of those who worship a foreign god. May this example soon be followed by many who today lead millions to worship Allah, Buddha and the myriad of Hindu gods. Please do not overlook that the terrible loss of life in the recent Tsunami were almost all worshipers of false gods. Do not miss the fact that G-d does not change and He requires those whom He created to worship only Him, according to the first of His Ten Words given in this week's Torah portion. Yes, we must pray for those whose lives were spared and do whatever we can to make their lives return to whatever normal may become for them, but we must, first and foremost, do as Moses did; we must be an example to them of what following the True G-d looks like so they may know Him as we do. Chapter 19 contains this, beginning in verse 3, "and Moses went up to G-d. The Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, "Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob and declare to the children of Israel: 'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to Me. Now then, if you will obey Me faithfully and keep My covenant, you shall be My treasured possession among all the peoples. Indeed, all the earth is Mine, but you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you shall speak to the children of Israel." Moses came and summoned the elders of the people and put before them all that the Lord had commanded him. All the people answered as one, saying, "All that the Lord has spoken we will do!" And Moses brought back the people's words to the Lord." The people were terrified to hear the voice of G-d speak to them directly, so they begged Moses to go hear from Him and tell them what to do. You know, many Christians are just like the children of Israel. For one reason or another, we really don't want to seek G-d on our own, preferring to have a pastor or teacher seek His word and just bring us the Cliff Notes! The ancient Rabbis tell us that the people heard the first three commandments themselves and grew more and more afraid with each word. But, even in their shrinking back, they made a declaration that assured them of their position with HaShem. They said, in chapter 20, verse 16, they said to Moses, " we will obey; but let not God speak to us, lest we die." They agreed to obey, even before they heard what the L-rd would command, but His power was so awesome that they knew they really had no choice but to do what He instructed.
Now, thirty five hundred years later, we have complete knowledge of what He instructed them and us to do. We have multiple translations, commentaries, sermon notes and instruction available on the radio, television, online and even in books; yet we still do whatever we can to avoid doing the one thing that Israel agreed to do, even before they knew what was coming. We do not obey His instruction to us! Rather, we twist and turn in the wind of every new revelation and doctrine. Mathew 5: 17 says, " "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill." We have been told since we could sit up straight in Sunday School that Jesus "fulfilled" the Law, so we do not have to live "under" its restrictions. But, what did the Master really mean? He gives example after example in the following text of how His Hebrew mind thought about fulfillment. Read verses 21 through the end of the chapter and you will see how He enlarges the requirements of Torah to include not just the letter of the law, but its intention as well. He expands the sin of adultery and of murder to include lust and hatred. He taught His followers then, as well as us now, that the requirements of His commandment are forever our duty to obey. Let's go back to verses 18 to 20. There, we find His words, ""For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 'Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 'For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.'" The clear word of the L-rd is that not the smallest bit of the Torah has passed away and shall not until it is all accomplished. And, no, His last words, "It is finished" could not have applied to this completion, for if all Torah was accomplished in His first coming, for what shall He return? Today, anyone who teaches Christians their responsibility to live according to Torah is called a legalist. Y'shua called him "great in the kingdom of heaven." Those whose churches are filled with happy, comfortable folks, "doing their own thing" are, according to the word of the Messiah, "least in the kingdom of heaven." He goes on to tell us that our righteousness must greater than that of the scribes and Pharisees. Not His righteousness, imparted to us by faith, He said that our righteousness must exceed that of some of the most careful Torah observant followers of G-d to ever walk the earth.
Dear friends, please do not neglect the word of the L-rd. He is speaking to you in ways that you may never have experienced before. When He speaks, you must not only listen, but you must obey. You must decide ahead of hearing from Him that you will follow His instruction and walk in the way He leads, no matter where that may take you. I realize, as I am writing this that I am talking to myself, but you are welcome to listen in! The L-rd has been showing me some new things that He has called me to develop that will challenge everything I have ever considered as part of our ministry. He is leading me into some new arenas that will shake up my comfort zone and stretch me beyond anything I have ever done before. He is calling me to allow Him to get me out of the way and allow Him to do things in me and through me that could change the church like nothing has in the past 100 years. I will tell you more within the next month or two. In the meantime, please pray that I will hear His voice and will follow Him closely. Chapter 20 continues with the giving of the Decalogue, and concludes with these observations: "All the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the blare of the horn and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they fell back and stood at a distance. 'You speak to us,' they said to Moses, 'and we will obey; but let not G-d speak to us, lest we die.' Moses answered the people, 'Be not afraid; for G-d has come only in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may be ever with you, so that you do not go astray.' So the people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where G-d was." Psalm 27: 7 & 8 says "Hear, O L-rd, when I cry with my voice, and be gracious to me and answer me. When You said, 'Seek My face,' my heart said to You, "Your face, O L-rd, I shall seek." Now is the time, dear friends for us all to seek His face.
May His Face be seen by us all, clearly and soon. Keep praying. Marty
Mission Update:
Greetings, I just got off the phone; I was talking with a man about trying to find someplace for a woman and two children to stay. The woman has a job and at pay day she will rent something even a motel. The Problem is the only shelter she could find open that would take her children could not tell her what to do with he 2 year old when she went to work, I am unsure about the other child, so her choices are really none, they said put the children in the children's home till she got a place but if she does the state will make a case on her and she could lose the children. What was she going to do? Quit her job then make matters worse? Well I could not find her an answer but prayers for her and her children, please add them to your list. Over and over I have said that the people that are homeless are not all bums and drug addicts. The theory that they are there because they want to be is also a farce, maybe less than 30% are that way. When Katrina hit the people cried because Wichita was going to house some of them making a emergency shelter, the said "Are we not good enough, are we just non people?" Donations went way down then too, it was a little easier to stay open then because we were just in a storefront. I am so glad that we America have went to the aid of our neighbors but at the cost of hurting our own people? I have searched the net to see if others are having problems of course they are. One of my good friends who have a ministry is in the same boat as I am because of donations not coming in that normally do. I look to the faces of the people that came today saying, I need depends (adult diapers) for a 75 year old, I need cold medication, do you have that coat, so many people so many needs, my heart is breaking having such a hard time to ful-fill there needs, you see a real pastor hurts when the sheep hurts and these people were appointed to me, one of my callings from my Father…….. SO now when I ask for prayers I am not asking you for money that is between you and the Father, I am asking you for deep serious honest prayers…….. In His Perfect Peace, Pastor Dan Catlin
Proverbs 4:8 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Psalm 25:4,5 Show me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

Wow how fast time goes 2010 is off and running. I just paid a few of the bills and I have the phone bills left for last month that are 344.48 to pay and then this months begin coming due. The electric bills came due yesterday so by monday i will more than likely have shut offs. the newsletter hasn't been done yet because there is no way we can do it with the burden of all these bills. I need right at 2300.00 by the 10th to pay what id due on that date. Yahweh will provide will you be one He uses to help this ministry to do his works. well I went to another doctor yesterday for a second opinion on my tail bone and it seems my doctor wasn't completey truthful with me about the findings of the xrays. The radiogist recommened an MRI to futher study my sacrum an coccyx. This is where the tailbone connects to the hip which explains all the hip pain I am having. Anyway my now X doctor's assisting doctor's nurse decided to tell me that it was broken and because there was no treatment for a broken tail bone an MRI would be to expensive to do so she told me to take advil and sit on a pillow and just let it heal 3-4 weeks. My new doctor decided to wait two weeks to see if the pain eased up any and then go from there. I also have psyical therpy to help make sure it is healing correctly. I'm doing ok just in a lot of pain pray for me. Our daughter Sarina is getting married next sabbath at messiah's branch so I've been really busy with her planning and getting ready. Thank you all who have been supporting us and continue to do so even throughout the hard finicial crisis we've all been struggling with. I;ve gotta close for now it's time to go care for the people,

Preaching the Hebrew Prayer in Prison
It was nice to visit but I wouldn't want to live there!
Last December I spoke in a Florida state prison on the Hebrew origins of the Lord's Prayer. I had never been inside a prison before so I was quite nervous. Mike Harrell, who runs a prison-motorcycle ministry called "Born Again to Ride", invited me to do this event with him. Mike goes into prisons all over Florida with a large assortment of Harleys and other loud motorcycles and then puts on a rock concert. The idea of "Born Again to Ride" is that inmates who would never otherwise be interested in God are drawn to the motorcycles and the music. When Mike first suggested I do a prison event with him, I warned him that I don't know how to operate a motorcycle and don't play any musical instruments. He assured me that my prison event wouldn't involve any motorcycles or Christian rock bands. Instead I would be speaking at a weekly Bible study. The prisoners who
participate in this sort of Bible study have already "cleaned up their act" and dedicated their lives to God. I would be there to teach on the Hebrew background of the New Testament to give them a deeper knowledge of the faith they already embraced. I jumped at the challenge and asked Mike to arrange it. Weeks later when we finally pulled up to the prison compound I started to think I had made a mistake. The prison looked like an Israeli border fortification, surrounded by a high chain-link fence with plenty of razor-wire and watch towers at regular intervals. We had to go through several layers of gates and steel doors to get to the main entrance area where a guard searched our bags and our bodies for any contraband. We were
then led down a series of hallways each of which ended in a steel door opened by an unseen guard in a control room somewhere. After about 10 minutes of this we finally arrived in the prison chapel where I set up my laptop and projector. The prisoners arrived about half an hour later. There were 30 inmates who came to the Bible study and a guard followed them in to
do a head count before locking us into the chapel and leaving. One prisoner in the front row saw my computer and asked excitedly if it was really a "laptop". He explained he'd "been inside" for 20 years and had never seen a laptop computer except in the movies. As I introduced myself and the subject I realized I was locked in with Mike, the prison chaplain, and 30 convicted inmates; there was no guard anywhere to be seen! Despite my apprehensions, I was very pleased with how my message was received and later said to Mike that I especially enjoyed having a "captive audience". As I presented the information, the inmates would often interrupt me with questions. I usually ask my audiences to leave their questions to the end. But I realized these men probably have few opportunities to express themselves so I decided to answer their questions
as they came. Instead of just spitting back answers, I opened a dialogue with them. As they would ask questions I would respond - in a Jewish way - by asking questions of my own, in order to challenge them to think. As I interacted with the inmates, I was extremely impressed by their knowledge of Scripture and Hebrew. Mike later explained that prisoners have lots of time on their hands; those that dedicate their lives to God spend much of this time studying. One example that really stood out for me was when I asked them, in response to one of their questions, if they knew the Hebrew meaning of the name "Jesus". The prisoner in the front row who had asked me about my laptop blurted out: "It means `Yahweh saves'". I was surprised that a convicted criminal who had never seen a laptop before knew something that most Christians do not know. I asked him how he knew this and he told me he studies for hours on end with his Bible, a Strong's Concordance and a Hebrew
dictionary. This reminded me of a letter written by William Tyndale, one of the first people to translate the Bible into English. At the time, translating the Bible was a crime and Tyndale was eventually burned at the stake for his efforts. As Tyndale sat in the dungeon of Vilvoorde Castle awaiting execution, he wrote to his jailers asking for:"a warmer cap. permission to have a candle in the evening, for it is wearisome to sit alone in the dark. But above all, I entreat and beseech your clemency to be urgent with the Procurer that he may kindly permit me to have my Hebrew Bible, Hebrew Grammar, and Hebrew Dictionary, that I may
spend my time with that study." I went into that Florida state prison fearing for my life but went out genuinely inspired by the dedication of these men to search out the truth and acquire knowledge even under the most difficult of human circumstances.
Pictures of my lecture at the Florida state prison are posted on the website of the book "A Prayer to Our Father: Hebrew Origins of the Lord's Prayer":http://www.aprayertoourfather.com/preaching-in-prison/ Nehemia Gordon Jerusalem, Israel
