HAPPY NEW YEAR

Shemot For the week of January 1, 2005 / 20 Tevet 5765 Torah: Shemot / Exodus 1:1 - 6:1 Haftarah: Isaiah 27:6 - 28:13; 29:22-23 Secret Identity "Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months." (Shemot / Exodus 2:1,2) Everybody has a secret identity. No one enters life knowing who they are. Some of us go through our entire lives never discovering our true identities. As we grow up it is often others who recognize our true identities before we ever do. Some people make finding their identity the whole focus of their lives. Those who do find it then discover that this is just the beginning. It can take a whole lifetime, if ever, to come to a full realization of who we really are. According to the Book of Hebrews in the New Covenant Scriptures, Moses' parents knew that he was special: "By faith Moses' parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict." (Hebrews 11:23) Exactly what they knew, we don't know, but they somehow perceived he was no ordinary baby, and they did everything they could to preserve him in the midst of Pharaoh's edict to destroy the male babies. It is interesting how it was God's special call on Moses that led to his being preserved and the unusual circumstances of being brought up in Pharaoh's household. How easy it would have been to live the rest of his life that way, enjoying the place and privilege he had, especially since it seemed to be the leading of God that brought him to that place. Even once he recognized he had a role to play with regard to his own people, some may have thought it would have been best to try to ease their oppression from his place of privilege. But that was not to be. As Moses began to explore his God-given role among his people, the resulting circumstances were such that he was catapulted far from both them and his Egyptian environment. His mishandling of a conflict between an Egyptian and a fellow Hebrew, resulted in his being rejected by both peoples. We don't know what he thought about himself during the next forty years as he lived in the land of Midian as a shepherd. We don't know if he had any understanding of his true identity. We do know that when the time came for him to take his place after so long, he wasn't quick to accept the call. In fact he did everything he could to avoid it. Yet God persisted. The time had come for his secret identity to be revealed. Moses was placed on this earth for a purpose, and it was necessary for him to fulfill that purpose. I don't know if God persists this way in every case. But what I am sure of is that the lives that many of us are living are no indication of the lives we are meant to live. For some there is a timing issue. Being sufficiently prepared before stepping into our true calling is essential. Like Moses, we may not see the connection between the preparation for the calling and its fulfillment, nor do we necessarily need to. But for others, our not coming to grips with our secret identity could be for other reasons. Perhaps the most common reason is not accepting that we might really have one. We may think that being truly significant is something reserved only for a select few. Or we might be afraid that we might actually have a special purpose to fulfill. Many people prefer the comfort of thinking they are normal (whatever that is), to facing the challenge of being special. To accept our true identities almost always means conflict, pain, and rejection. Some of us would rather fit in, than suffer the consequences of being different. Tragically, when we are not willing to accept our true identities, we reject ourselves, our calling and God. It is only when we come to accept who we really are, that we discover what it means to truly live. TorahBytes

Shmot (Exodus 1:1-6:1) Family Parsha Shmot 5765

Each of us has inside ourselves the ability to accomplish much more than we realize. Yet sometimes we let our fears and feelings of not being good enough stand in the way. In this week's Torah portion, we learn about how Moses had within him the ability to stand up against the cruel and powerful Pharaoh, and be the one to lead the entire Jewish people out from miserable slavery to freedom. At first even Moses didn't realize he could do it. But God encouraged him, and helped him to see his true abilities. Moses discovered his hidden potential and changed the course of human history. We, too, can learn how to see our true abilities, overcome the feelings that hold us back, and accomplish what we never thought we could. In our story a kid discovers his hidden potential - in the bottom of a pool. "OFF THE DEEP END" It may have only been a 20 meter pool, but to me it looked like the Atlantic Ocean. As I stood there in line watching one kid after another jump in and swim to the other side, I knew only one thing: I could never do it. I had been taking after-school swimming lessons. Everything went along fine at first. I learned to tread water, paddle like a dog, and even to do 'the crawl' stroke. Maybe I couldn't actually swim, but now, at least, I could flop around in the water long enough for a lifeboat to arrive. Let the typhoon come; I was ready. But on the day of the last lesson, Mr. Walder, our instructor, told us that as a final exam we were all going to swim from one end of the pool to the other. I thought he was joking. But when he lined us all up on one side of the big indoor heated pool, I saw he was serious, and I knew only one thing - I was in way over my head. Maybe I knew how to tread water well enough to get by in an emergency, but I couldn't actually swim, and certainly not well enough to get across the whole pool! As we got in line, I was careful to strategically position myself at the end of the line. I figured the hour-long lesson would probably finish well before they reached my turn, and I would be able to quietly return home to life on dry land. But soon I saw that wasn't going to happen. The line was moving too fast. Somehow the same kids who just a couple of months ago couldn't swim across a bathtub were suddenly gliding across the pool like Olympic stars. Now there were only two guys ahead of me and I began to panic. Maybe I could pretend I had a cramp, or explain to Mr. Walder how I had to get home early that day to baby-sit for my pet cat. One way or the other I would have to get out of it. After all, there was no way to do the impossible. Mark, the guy in front of me, jumped in and now it was just the two of us - me and the instructor on one side of the pool, and everyone else on the other. "Okay, Scott, last but not least. Your turn!" called out the man with a smile, his shining whistle dangling on the chain around his neck. I didn't move. It was embarrassing for sure to just stand there like a zombie, but it sure beat drowning! Mr. Walder came closer and asked, "What's going on, Scotty?" "I can't do it, Mr. Walder," I answered between clenched teeth. "It's impossible. I can't swim across the pool." I was afraid he was going to laugh, or start yelling at me. He looked at me, then at the water, shook his head and said, "I know just how you feel." He did? "It looks like an awfully long way from this side of the pool. But you know what? You can do it." I was glad he felt that way, but that didn't change the impossible reality. I shook my head tensely. "No, you don't understand. I can't swim. I just can't do it." "Look Scott," he said patiently. "It might seem like it is beyond you, but I've been watching you during all of these lessons, and I'm telling you, you can swim." I shook my head. "Scott, you have the tools. You know how to do the crawl stroke, move your arms and kick you feet, right?" "Yeah, but..." "And you know how to turn your head and breathe between strokes too, don't you?" I nodded. It was true, but still... "Scotty, guess what? That means you know how to swim!" I was about to argue, then I gave his words a second thought. It was true, I could do all the things he mentioned. Did that mean I really could swim after all? "So what do you say, Scotty?" "Okay, but swimming across the whole pool? I mean, it's so far." "It's just one crawl stroke after another. I'll be right there with you. I know you can do it, and I think by now you know it too. Go ahead, jump in and swim!" I couldn't even believe I was doing it myself, but I asked God to get me across to the other side in one piece, jumped into the water and started doing the strokes just like he taught me. Miracle of miracles, a few minutes later I reached the other end of the pool! "You did it man, you did it!" cried out the instructor. All the kids were cheering, and I felt incredible! Maybe I wouldn't win any Olympic medals, but I could swim! As I climbed out of the pool, I thanked God for getting me across the pool, and started to wonder about how many other things I really could do, but just didn't know it yet. Aish.com

Mission Updates: Greetings Saints in His Perfect Peace, Been a real long week. Friday the employee's from the Credit Union bank bring presents to over 100 people on their gift list. Ed who is a volunteer that helps at Messiah's Branch and works at the Bank encourages his fellow employee's into helping him buy presents for the mostly homeless that come to Messiah's Branch. Ed who is a Public Relations man for the bank is always eager to help. I can give him plates of food and send him off under the bridge to feed the poor. He always pitches in to wipe and clean the tables in his work clothing...which can be expensive suits. But no matter to good hearted Ed he jumps right in. This will be the fourth year for the Holiday gifts. His Wife Randi is also a Saint that helps and she is a blessed person. Talk about shopping I would not want to have to do her job...yuk yuk! I am sure Ed helps.... The people write down three items on the list and they try their hardest to get 2 out of the three. Many get things like needed coats, shoes, and clothing items. I know one girl who just finally got a place with her mother who were both homeless for sometime got pots and pans. Yes ol Ed did not make them wait but gave them to them the first of the month when they found the place. The girl suffers from sickle cell and has just went through a series of blood transfusions. She is in her late teens to early 20's. But yes children are on the list. I know one Father who just got custody of his two girls are on the list. They are 4 and 3 I think. Friday will be a big day for us at Messiah's Branch. Tuesday we were packed when we opened as so many jammed in for brunch. We had a good pleasant day. We just about gave out all the gloves and hats that came in. Also some colored hats came in and I think are gone. Also most of the army blankets are gone along with various others that have came in here and there. I saw some people whom I have not seen in some time while others are missing so to speak. I still have some hold outs who are still outside. Some sleep in a parking garage, while other have built camps at various places on the river. We have had a little extra small canned items we have been giving out along with a bunch of donated milk. Saints last new years eve many on this list helped us go in top the first of the year with our bills paid. The donations started on new years eve and went till after midnight! We really need your help worse this year. We need to make a food order for canned things and noodles. We serve many chicken and noodles and hamburger noodles. We need canned vegetables etc. Mom says she needs $200 just for this order. The freezer for meat is almost empty! On top of that we need the monthly bill money.......So please pray about mercy to the poor at the end of this year and help as much as you can so we can go into 2005 with things paid up! We also need donations for more big print Bibles! Food for the soul as well as for the body is in need. By the way the exhaust van for the Kitchen should be in by Friday when I get there! The FATHER bless thee and keep thee; The FATHER make His face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee; The FATHER lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee shalom. (peace)Bemidbar (Numbers) 6:24-26 In Yeshua's Name, Bro. Dan, Pastor of Messiah's Branch Shalom In Yeshua Our Messiah, Friday was a very busy day at the Mission and Kathy was home with the flu. HELP! I had some errands to run so Sarina and Larry started making the egg sandwiches. When I arrived Sarina then had to help organize the gift giving. Larry made 9 dozen egg sandwhiches. We served many donut's with milk ,ice tea, ice water and hot coffee. John kept a count during the day and at one point we had 78 people in our small little home like Mission. The Wichita paper came to cover this event that was about the holiday gifts the bank has supplied for the past four years. The reporter interviewed both Pastor Dan and Ed (the banker), both of which made it clear to him that we do not participate in the worldly Dec 25th celebration. The newspaper ignored that as you can see by reading the papers article Pastor Dan posted earlier. We give the gifts as holiday gifts to many who have needs, no family or homes. These are gifts of needs they consist of shoes, boots, blankets, coats, stocking hats, gloves and some who are in need house hold items. It was great to see all the smiling faces as they received their much needed gifts. I made left over spaghetti sauce it was mixed hamburger sauce and white chicken breast sauce. I put this over bow tie noodles, served with cottage cheese, corn-n-peas, and toasted bread. It turned out to be really good I even had reports back about many of them bragging on how good it was. The Mission gas and electric bills both came Friday and so did the money to pay them Praise Yahweh. It's time for the news letter again and I would love to see it go out this Friday(new years eve). We need 200 to print and 118.40 to mail. The over seas went last month so they won't go out again till March. I pray you all a very safe worldly new year , if you celebrate please do so carefully. We still need food money and gas money so Please pray about supporting these works. Thank you all who help in one way or another an Yahweh BLESS the Saint who sent 120 stamps, those will be used to mail out the Prison Weekly Shalom More on the Mission next update: Last Weeks answer: Isaiah 11:10-16 10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. 11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. 12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. 13 The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim. 14 But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them. 15 And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod. 16 And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt. Find This Passage: The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel. And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart, The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars. Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together; The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts. Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day. The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed. Therefore the LORD shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

It is with saddest heart that I pass on the following news...
Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community.
The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection, and complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71. Doughboy is survived by his wife, Play Dough, two children, John Dough and Jane Dough, who has a bun in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart. Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Buttersworth, Hungry Jack, The California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies and
Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours. Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy, and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart "cookie", wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he still, as a crusty old man, was considered a roll model for millions. The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.
