Prison weekly March 6, 2004
Tezavveh & Zachor For the week of March 6, 2004 / 13 Adar 5764 Shemot / Exodus 27:20 - 30:10 & Devarim / Deuteronomy 25:17-19 Haftarah: Ezekiel 43:10-27; Replaced by 1 Samuel 15:2-34 First published the week of February 23, 2002 / 11 Adar 5762 God's Grief Then the word of the LORD came to Samuel: "I am grieved that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions." (1 Samuel 15:10,11). First, to explain why we have a special reading, the Festival of Purim (see the book of Esther) this year is on the 26th of this month (Note: Year 2004 - March 7). The Shabbat (English: Sabbath) which precedes Purim is called Zachor, meaning "Remember" and refers to the passage in Devarim (Deuteronomy) 25:17-19, where God calls the Israelites to remember what the Amalekites did to them, when they mistreated the Israelites prior to their entering the Promised Land. The connection between the Amalekites and Purim is that Haman, who sought the destruction of the Jewish people at the time of Queen Esther, was a descendant of Agag, the Amalekite king at the time of King Saul. Because this coming Shabbat is the one before Purim, the passage concerning the Amalekites is read in addition to the normal weekly reading, and the passage in 1 Samuel where King Saul was told to carry out the directive from Devarim, is read in the place of the normal Haftarah. Let's now look at that passage. Saul's failure to fully follow God's instructions regarding the destruction of the Amalekites grieved God. God was grieved. The Creator of all things, the Master of the Universe, the All Knowing One, experienced grief. He felt bad over something that he himself had initially decided to do. He had appointed Saul king, but now he felt bad about it. This is similar to God's response to the state of human affairs that existed prior to the Flood: The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain (Bereshit / Genesis 6:6). In both these cases, God had a change of heart regarding his original decision. We have a tendency not to take seriously these descriptions of God experiencing something so human as grief or regret. This is far too human a thing for us to associate with God. After all how could God grieve over something, when he knows everything from the beginning? We would expect God to respond with something more like, "I knew that was going to happen!" Our philosophical analyses of stories such as this can prevent us from truly understanding what it is we need to learn here. However these things actually work, we need to realize that God responds to what we do. Human existence is not the simple unfolding of a program, predetermined by divine forces. The Scriptures are clear that life is anything but mechanical. Saul's reluctance to carry out God's directions had great consequences both personally and nationally. It is not good to grieve God. In the New Covenant writings we are warned not to grieve God by engaging in certain kinds of negative attitudes and actions: Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice (Ephesians 4:30,31). While he is most patient with us and is quick to forgive, let us not think we can take him for granted. Grieving God is no light thing. TorahBytes The Book Is Better "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5). A few weeks ago I dedicated several Truah messages to some of the issues surrounding Mel Gibson's "The Passion." In the years that I have been writing TorahBytes and now Truah, I have never received so much response over any one subject. One person wrote me and encouraged me to put a hold on discussing the movie until after I had seen it – a fair comment. I went opening night. Even after all that has been said about this movie, I really didn't know what to expect. Honestly, I was a little nervous. I had read that this was one of the most violent films ever, and I tend to stay away from violent films. I am the kind of person that when I see a movie, it gets replayed in my head over and over again, regardless of the subject matter. I didn't know how I would handle it. Another reason for my hesitancy was over how I would react to the actual subject matter. Would I find it anti-Semitic as some were claiming? Would I be deeply moved by the sufferings of Yeshua? Would I be distracted by things in the movie that were either not really in the Bible or were misinterpretations? Some who had already seen the movie were reporting that it was life changing. Others that it was bad. Some said that it was horrific. Others were deeply touched by the love therein. Reading the vast array of reactions, one might think that people were not all referring to the same movie. About three quarters of the way through, I leaned over and said to one of my friends I was with, "The Book is better." Just like so many attempts to take a writer's work to the big screen, Gibson's grand effort falls short. Millions of dollars, the utilization of the original languages, graphic images, moving music, masterful directing, and great acting can in no way fully convey the essence of what is contained in the Bible. God chose to reveal himself through words, not pictures, not moving pictures. The inability of images to convey heavenly reality is expressed over and over again in the Scriptures. Yet I do think there is much potential for good to come out of Gibson's film. It is good for people to be confronted with what Yeshua did on our behalf. Few of us understand the enormity of the price he paid. Did Gibson go overboard? If he did, not by much. The Church needs to deal with the charge of anti- Semitism. So many don't understand why some in the Jewish community are uncomfortable with the film. It's time for Christians to listen to the pain of the Jewish people and learn how the truths of the Gospel could heal those wounds. I am sure that this film will result in many people taking the time to deal with deep spiritual issues that we tend to avoid. It's just that the answers to those questions are not found in Gibson's movie. They are found in the Bible. Truah/TorahBytes Parsha: Tetzaveh (Exodus 27:20-30:10) Family Parsha Tetzaveh 5764 By: Nesanel Safran It doesn't take big leaps or dramatic acts to succeed, only continual and consistent effort. This week's Torah portion describes both the continually lit lamp - the Ner Tamid, and the continual offering - the Korban Tamid in the Tabernacle. Both were distinguished by their quality of consistency. We can take a lesson from them and realize that the surefire way to reach our goals is through consistent work. back to top STORY In our story, a boy learns about the effectiveness of consistency. "OUT OF THE WOODS" "Great job, Michael. We're proud of you!" My uncle Jack was all smiles as he pumped my hand. I had just finished my Bar Mitzvah reading, and everyone seemed so happy about how well I did. I smiled back, and winked over at my friend, Steve, who was standing across the room. I wonder if, besides him, any of them realized just how close I came to giving up and not doing it at all? You see, I have a lot of talents. I can run faster than anyone else in my class, and nobody can beat me at checkers. But when it comes to things like reading, especially in Hebrew, let's just say I'm not at the top of the class. The words and letters just seem to jumble and get lost somewhere between my eyes and my tongue. So I would go twice a week to Mr. Frand's house for extra tutoring to learn the special section I was supposed to read out loud for my Bar Mitzvah. He was a nice enough guy, and his wife always served really good homemade cakes and cookies. But I felt like I was getting nowhere, fast, and after a couple lessons I was ready to throw in the towel. Since Mr. Frand lived on the other side of the neighborhood, the fastest way to get there was to cut through the path in the woods behind my house. A lot of times my buddy, Steve, who lived next door to the tutor, would meet me after the lesson and we would either spend the afternoon hanging out at his place, or we'd walk through the woods together to mine. That's what we were doing that day, but I wasn't very good company. That week I had really stumbled through my lesson, and as we hiked along the well-worn path, all I could do was fuss and complain. "That's it, I'm quitting. Lessons or no lessons, I just can't read the thing, and I never will." Steve tried to get me to laugh it off, but then he saw I was serious. "But you only started the lessons a few weeks ago, what do you expect? Do you practice every day?" he asked. "A few weeks, few months, few years ... what difference does it make? With my thick head I'll never get it, so what's the point of practicing? Whenever I try to read, the words come out more tangled up than those thorn bushes over there!" I said bitterly, pointing to the side of the path. We walked a bit more in silence, then Steve turned to me with a funny look. "Mike, I think I have your answer." I didn't know I had asked him a question. "The only way to get through the thorn bushes is to make a path." He seemed excited about his idea, but I had no idea what he was talking about. "What?" "Don't you get it? If the woods are so full of brambles and thorn bushes, how come we can walk across it so easily?" I glared at him. My mind was burned out enough from the lesson; what did I need to play 20 questions for? "What kind of question is that? We don't walk through the bushes, we walk down the path." "Ah hah!" he said, "And how did the path get here? Did it just appear out of thin air?" I picked up a rock and lobbed it into a nearby stream. I wasn't sure what he was driving at, but it was actually an interesting question. I thought back about when the two of us first became friends. There really wasn't any path back then. I remembered how hard it was to walk through, and how Steve and I had kept cutting through the same way to get to each other's houses. After a while all that walking, day after day, sort of pushed aside and crushed down a few of the bushes, and smoothed out a path... I think I was starting to get Steve's point. "You're trying to say that by cutting through the same place over and over, we made the path through the thorn bushes, right?" "That's right. Even though each time we walked through it didn't seem to change anything, eventually it added up and we had a path. Same thing here - if you stick to lessons and keep going over them every day, I'm sure you'll..." "I'll cut through the thorn bushes in my head and start to read better, right?" "That's right!" We played a little less that day since I had my lessons to practice. And while it wasn't easy - I had some pretty tough thorns in my head - little by little, I started to read much better, and by the time my Bar Mitzvah rolled around, I was ready. It was a great day and everyone was proud. But no one was happier than me, and my friend, who taught me how by sticking to it, I could get unstuck. Aish.com MB Updates7For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Greetings Saints In His Perfect Peace, We had a question brought up to us The question was "How do you do everything you do with limited space and limited funds?" First I just laughed. The answer is very simple it is called Faith. Matthew 21:20 21 Yeshua answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. 22And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Mark 11:2121And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away. 22And Yeshua answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. 23For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. 25And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 26But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses. You see the simple answer is we do nothing. The ministry we are in is appointed by the Father! It's His and it glorifies him not us. John 15:1 1"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2"Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3"You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4"Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6"If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8"By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. This is where we get the name Messiah's Branch because without him we can do nothing. We are obedient is the things he wishes of Him. So he cares for His work. Without him we can of nothing. He uses all kinds of people all over to get this work done a Box from Texas with a few things or a donation from Alabama, hats, gloves, blankets from another state all people the father uses to do his work not ours in Wichita. A man comes by drops off eggs another cans of soup all add up to help the people and do his work. People the Father uses. We have one place that donates bread and helps with other things like cheap number 10 size canned foods for 15 cents a pound....and we are good stewards of what provision the Father has given us because we know it's His and not ours. Yes just like Friday I heard mom tell grandma tonight Kathy fed out over 6 dozen egg sandwiches on Friday plus dozens of donuts. The Donuts are donated from a donut shop that gives us the donuts. A man who works PR for a Bank picks them up drops them off. The left over are taken to the mentally handicapped. James 2:14 14What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And he was called the friend of God. 24You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. 25Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? 26For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. You see works and fruits are natural to the saved man or woman. We serve over an average of 100 hot full course meals every week plus the brunch sandwiches, coffee, donuts, and foods given out like boxes of cereal, romaine noodles, soups, candy cheese crackers and many other things. all sent to us or brought in a little by this one or that one. The Net generall brings in about all the gas money which takes roughly about $400 to $500 a month. I put many miles on the van and like now I find it needs front brakes which will have to be fixed by tomorrow and by Faith I believe the Father will fix His ministry van .......The mail out newsletter has been going by Faith for 106 issues. By Faith I am ready to make 107 and the $325 ( I think that what the cost is ) will come so I can print and mail out and then some of those people will send boxes from all over the country. And what comes is really just what's needed when it's needed. Just like we needed gloves, hats, warm socks all came as they were needed and all went out the next day Friday. Well I might have a couple of pairs of gloves left but they will be gone. Friday we had a group called the Christian Motorcycle Association come to our service to check us out as they wish to help or Adopt us was their words. The Holy spirit did a great job in explaining what we were about and not they claim we are adopted? We need tapes badly they are called 122 minute tapes, 61 minutes a side. We get them from kingdom ministries for about $100 with labels. We need these badly coping over old tapes is not a clear tape by Faith the father new we were going to be slow so he had a family carry us part of this month until other monies or donation came in. This same family the father had them donate enough to start the Radio program. The father has blessed that family with a great new job where he does not have to work now on the Sabbath and over a $1000 in monies that was unexpected for them. Because he did as the Father had him do. So I pray this answers this persons questions as it's the best I can...please keep us in your prayers and pray for this man who donated and read the other prayer request after.... Item Title: Use this as you feel needed. My prayers are with you always. I hope this helps and that you will receivemore. Stay strong in your convictions. God will provide. Thanks for all you do. In Christ, Shalom in Yeshua our Messiah, Friday we were blessed to have grandma go along and she made the egg-n-cheese sandwhiches. She also made samon patties and chocolate pies for dinner and Kathy made her home made mac-n-cheese yummy. They served black eyed peas and bread-n- butter with the samon patties all was gobbled up and none left over. Well we also had grandma stay for service and to our surprise my older brother showed up. We have had our three grandchildren since last Tuesday and Friday Cody bug the oldest of the three was answering all Pastor dans questions that he was addressing to the adults,I was so proud of him I even said that's my grandson there. Well we might not have to worry about getting any more wood as it seems to have warmed up around here. Praise Yahweh now if it would just dry up and be rid of all the mud. We need blankets and coats as the shelters will more than likely close now that the tempatures are above freezing. The people will have no where to go so they will start coming in for blankets and Yahwhe willing we will have them to hand out amen.Pray for this ministry we are about to go back on radio and I am not sure how that will work but it will be on-line this time amen. The newsletter is coming up again as is the Mission rent, electric, gas and water so pray about suppoting these works. We love you all and thank you to those who support these works of Yahweh. Stay warm and in His Word more on the works next week Shalom Last weeks answers:In what language did Yeshua speak to Saul when He met him on the road to Damascus? A. Hebrew Acts 26:12-15 12Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, 13At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 15And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. Passage found In:John 9:1-171: And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.2: And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?3: Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.4: I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.5: As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.6: When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,7: And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.8: The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?9: Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.10:Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?11: He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.12: Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.13: They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.14: And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.15: Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.16: Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.17: They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet. This weeks question:1. How many son's did Jacob have and what were their names? Find this Passage:Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him. And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him. And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.NAIL IN THE FENCE (Most importantly the last sentence.) There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there. " A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Please forgive me if I have ever left a hole.with much love sisterlinda Mark 9:23,10:27 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible
